This is a bit hard to explain in a post but I will try. I have done quite a bit of NAV to Excel export work over the years but am running into something in NAV 2016 that I haven’t found a work around for yet.
In NAV 2009 if you exported something to Excel it would open it up as book1.xlsx and the file would not actually be saved yet. So if you hit the Save button in Excel it would pop up the dialog to save the file since it was never been saved yet.
In NAV 2016 if you export something (Account Schedules, Ribbon, Actions, Export To Excel for example) it opens it up but has already saved the file to a location like C:UsersyourusernameAppDataLocalTempMicrosoft Dynamics NAVsomenumber{772EAC2F-AD5A-458B-A7A5-F021D3525636}. So if you hit save in Excel it just saves the file again (in a location that people don’t really know about) and does not pop up the save as dialog box.
I am trying to find a way to open the excel spreadsheet from NAV in a way where the file is not actually saved yet. Also I do understand how NAV uploads the file to the service tier and then downloads it back so I get why it is saving it to a temporary location.
A quick test you can try is if you simply create a new excel spreadsheet and then go to File, Info (hit Show All Properties) and it says Last Modified By:Not Saved yet. This is what I am trying to mimic in NAV 2016.
Thoughts?
