      Greetings,

Now that a new year is under way and you are making your 2017 plans, NAVUG Summit or Focus 2017 Conference, which one should I attend?

Of course I would recommend that you attend both conferences, but realistically – the best advice I can give is to start with the end in mind.  What is your purpose for attending a conference, what is your end game?

In many cases, companies will elect to attend both events, but may need to assess which staff attends which conference.  In any case, below is some information to help you decide!

We are currently on NAV 2013 R2.  It seems every day we still learn more about our current system.  We are always looking for new ways to improve and streamline our processes.

I understand the most recent NAV release is going to be the focus, but what about those of us that are looking to increase our knowledge of our current NAV.  Based on this would it be most beneficial to go to Summit or Focus.

Regardless of what version of NAV you are currently using, there is such a wealth of knowledge to be gained by attending either/both of these events.   I have found that you meet such a diverse user base, that if you take the time to socialize a bit, you will learn almost as much outside the official events as you do inside them.   Everybody is friendly and very happy to help answer questions regardless of the version.   There is also such a wide variety of industries represented and sometimes hearing how one company found an answer to a problem they had, might just give you a new perspecive on an issue you have been wrestling with.  Yes, the events do promote the newest version out there, but you can’t blame Microsoft for wanting to get in some advertising after all.

Steven, you are spot on, thank you for your perspective. An attendee commented on their survey a couple years ago that “It’s the hallway chatter that makes it so valuable”, and we do focus on providing an environment that drives the sharing of ideas and solutions inside the rooms and in the hallways. On the planning team of every event, we are mindful of the wide range of versions still in use, but have found lately that many on older versions would like to hear what’s on the newer versions.  Fortunately, while speakers at Focus and Summit this year will use 2017 and 2016, much of the functionality is the same in 2015/2013, and they typically can highlight the key differences.  Thank you for your question Amy!
