We’re exploring options to store our old NAV 2009 database for a couple of years after we go live with 2018 and prefer not to need SQL. This copy would be for staff to look up old data such as comments or other customer info for those we choose not to bring into 2018. Security would be easiest if it’s Classic Client on a hostserver. Can I put a local copy of NAV with database authentication on a hostserver shared drive? Thanks!

A little confused, are you suggesting converting back from SQL to proprietary Cside database for your 2009 database?

Not too big of a deal to just have sql server and the NAV client installed on same machine and then have people go in through remote desktop when they need it.  That’s what we do.

We have a low usage computer with SQL standard installed on it, and users RDP to get into the old NAV2009 DB. It does not take much effort to provision a computer / old server to do that.

We’re trying to keep this old version as simple as possible and accessible on premise after we start over in the cloud with 2018. We’re also trying to keep licensing as simple and inexpensive as possible. If I use the 2009 Classic Client I hope to save the cost of SQL server license and CALs. Is it possible to load 2009 on a shared server or PC with remote access that way? Thank you, again.

Yes you can backup the database restore it to the classic FDB, create the service connection and allow remote users to access it.
Nav 2009, remember to setup the proper HOST/SERVICES files as needed with proper TCP connection.
      Good luck

Thanks all who contributed. The final answer is SQL server is needed for 2009 with Classic Client, but it does not require an Appserver.
