Get the help server working
Posted by Greg Alford on December 4, 2019 at 1:41 pm-
When our partner installed Business Central Spring Edition, they did not fill in the parameters for the help server. I have tried uninstalling the help server, but when I re-install the help server, the parameters are greyed out. Does anyone know how I can get the help server working in Business Central?

Hello,If you have access to the installation media for Dynamics 365 Business Central, then you should be able to reinstall Help Server. During the installation process, you will be asked to fill in those fields. If Help Server is already installed, then you can edit the settings in the administration tool:Ā https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/administration/administration-tool
You can read about Help Server and other options of connecting your Business Central solution with relevant Help here:Ā https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/dev-itpro/deployment/configure-help#on-premises-deploymentsI hope this helps you find a solution to your problems. Otherwise you might want to reach out to your partner again for assistance. Note that you no longer have to use Help Server, and that this might be why the partner left the parameters empty.

Thanks for trying. However:
1. There does not appear to be any settings for the help server in the administrative tool.
2. I can’t make heads or tails of the Microsoft help instructions.——————————

Let’s make sure the help server is working before worrying about how to connect it to the clients.
You’ll have to substitute some pieces of this URL to test it. I am making the assumption that when your partner installed BC, they set the help server website to use the default port of 49000. You’ll need to substitute mybcserver for whatever yours is. Try this from a web browser (and I do not know whether it will need to be http: or https: – try both):
If that works, reply back and we’ll take the next step with the BC Admin tool.

That did not work. I have verified that the ports are open on my firewall and on my server.

That sounds to me like the Help server was never installed.

After many attempts, I found one combination that worked.
1. Uninstall help and the client.
2. Reboot.
3. Run the installation from the server.a. I copied the CD to a folder on the C Drive.
b. I right clicked on Setup and chose “Run As Administrator”4. I was then able to enter the Help Server name and port.
Now the help server is working.Ā
You would think Microsoft could make this just a little bit easier.
