We are re-implementing NAV to the 2017 version.Ā  We have a single line of business with no need for General Business Posting Groups.Ā  We imported our customers from our old NAV, having blanked out the field for General Business Posting Group, because we no longer wanted to use that posting group at all.Ā  Microsoft documentation that I’ve read online says that General Business Posting Groups are not required, but in our test NAV 2017 company we get an error message, saying that this posting group is missing.Ā  This occurs when we enter the customer on a sales order, and there is also a message on the customer card saying that the GBPG is missing.Ā  Is there anyone who uses NAV without General Business Posting Groups?Ā  Or are you required (despite what the documentation says) to have a least one, such as “All”?

      Hi there,Ā

We had similar issues when we were in our testing phases. We ended up creating two GBPGsĀ  – one for our regular business and one for samples because we could not get our samples to map correctly to the GL (even with a sample general product posting group) without an additional GBPGs.Ā

My recommendation is to create the general business posting group because they definitely help, and I haven’t found a way to use NAV 2017 without them.Ā

Very curious to see if someone else has, so I will be following this closely.

      Good Luck!

We use NAV 2017 without Gen. Business Posting Groups, so it is definitely possible. Ā If you could provide a screenshot of the error message(s) you are receiving, we can try and narrow down what is happening.Ā

My first thoughts are, the transactions that you are working with, did you also import those from your previous version? Ā If so, did you also remove the data in the Gen. Business Posting Group on the individual transactions before importing them, at both the header and the line levels?

      Hi Alan,

Gen. Bus. Posting Groups have always been “optional”, but will still require the setup of a blank GBPG record in combination with the Gen. Prod. Posting Groups in the General Posting Setup to direct the GL accounts to use for transaction posting. Ā

The customer card has the ShowMandatory property on the Gen. Bus. Posting Group field set to TRUE to recommend that the field would be a mandatory field to be setup on the customer record.Ā  Without modification, NAV will not require this value to be setup on the customer.Ā  Validation would occur during posting, when it is looking to the General Posting Setup to determine the combination of GBPG and GPPG to be used for posting.Ā  Other than that, you should not experience errors unless there are modifications made to your system to require the fields upon entry.

      Thanks!
