I wanted to share with the forum our positive feedback on a NAV add-on tool named Excel Journal import. We identified this as a requirement and our NAV partner originally came back to us with a proposal for a 3-day development for a custom XML port that would have had a fixed structure and been limited to only the general journal import.
I had to believe that many customers would have had the same requirement – and that something more broad and flexible than this already existed. Ā
After a quick search I found the following NAV add-on which costed less than the 3-day custom development and which our end-users have been very happy with.
Not only can we import into a general journal – but also into any other type of journal including fixed asset journals and item journals.

AreĀ you running an older version of NAV?
The current versions, since 2015, have the ability import from Excel directly into a journal with no add-on or customization.
Just wondering.

Hi Sue,Ā
Just curious which version of NAV are you using it for? I found this add-on really useful until version NAV2009.
Using NAV 2013 and up, you can simply paste into journal pages directly from Excel as long as field/column order is same. Ā Most of my users adopted to pasting from Excel and preferred it rather than runningĀ the imports.

Copying and pasting is very cool and I do it a lot.Ā But I have found it can be quite slow if you are posting more than 400 or 500 records.Ā So slow in fact that it becomes almost unusable if you are doing more records than this.Ā Also if it errors it doesn’t roll back everything just stops where the error is so you might have some of your records but not all.Ā By the way, 3 days to do a fixed GL import is way overpriced!

We are using this with NAV 2017.Users also reviewed the copy/paste option but found it to be a little hit & miss – and also restrictive in that NAV dictates that all the columns have to be in the same order as the display order.
Users found that the Excel Journal Import add-on is more flexible and as long as the column heading is the same as the NAV field name – then it is less particular about the column order.
Agreed – for imports of 500+ records then it is quite slow but we were aware of that and only have a few of these each month.
For our main GL import which can be approx. 30,000 records – we stuck with an XML import.

Thank you, I’ve created my own and it’s used with Excel files/Worksheets etc. I agree the copy/paste is slow ad will cause issues when an error is located.——————————
