      Is it possibly to change the field label in Business Central? There are a few fields (like Reference No.) that we’re using to track sales that are specific to our customized process.Ā 

      Any feedback or assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

      Hi Abby,

      You cannot change the field heading, but your partner can create an extension for you (create a new field for you).

      HI Abbey,

      Field heading can not be changed directly in Business Central but it can be changed through page extension.

      In page extension you can change the caption of a field. For Example:

      {

      Ā  Ā layout

      Ā  Ā  Ā modify(“External Document No”)

      Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā {

      Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Caption = ‘External Document No – Reference No.’;

      Abby – best practices would advise that you do not rename or repurpose fields in Business Central, it may or probably will come back to haunt you at some point.Ā  The better direction would be to create a new field to accommodate your specific needs as noted above.Ā  You would need to create an extension, either way, so you might as well do it the correct way.Ā  Leaving the native field as-is and creating a new one specific to your needs.Ā Ā 

      Several reasons for not changing an existing field are: the connections of the field to other area’s within Business Central, and you may decide you need it for its intended purpose down the road.

      Thanks for the feedback, Holly! I agree, however the fields are already in use and mapped in our integration. In Dynamics CE we’re able to change the display name of the field without changing the schema name or affecting any mappings; I was hoping for similar functionality in BC. Sounds like the extension is the only option.Ā

      Maneesha is spot on. You can extend the page. You are not technically renaming the underlying table field but changing the caption. So you’re not changing any logic behind it but simply changing the caption.
