Avalara sales tax
Posted by Alan Hyde on June 18, 2020 at 9:28 am-
We are implementing Avalara sales tax services with NAV, and I’d like to contact someone who has been down this road.Ā One question is regarding Entity Use Code.Ā Avalara told us a field for this should appear on the customer record (sell-to and/or ship-to customer) and also on the item lines on a sales order.Ā Our NAV connection with Avalara has resulted in NAV having a table which lists Entity Use Codes, but we have no fields on customer cards or sales orders where we can select an Entity Use Code.Ā Anyone else have this experience?

Alan,
I believe Marucci Sports in Baton Rouge, LA implemented Avalara.
Angela Dunnahoe is the CIO at Marucci.——————————

Alan,Here are some steps:
- Go to Avalara AvaTax > Avatax Utilities > Avatax Customer Entity Use Code Mapping.
- Select + New.
- Select the customer number,Ā ship-to code, customer name, and entity use code you want to associate with the customer record.
- Select Edit List to save your changes.
Thanks,
Steve——————————

You are correct that field does not exist on the Customer itself.Ā It is a table attached to the Customer (“AVA Entity/Use Code”) as Steve has mentioned.Ā From there it flows to all document for that customer into a new table called “AVA Document Entity Class” which is where it really matters.Ā It is a small pain not having it directly on the Customer itself so we created a mod that makes it look like it is a field on the Customer when in reality it is not.

The entity use code is located in Avatax-Utilities-Entity/Use Code Mapping.Ā There you can assign it to a customer. Ā——————————

I was under the impression that the Entity Use Code could be changed on a sales order for a particular transaction.Ā Not so?

I don’t see on the sales order header or lines. Ā Would there be a reason why you would change for a customer?——————————

We are trying to learn the options available for changing exempt status.Ā For example, a customer who is normally exempt because they are a reseller may occasionally buy an item that is for their internal use and is therefore taxable.
Since my last post, I have seen in our Avalara/NAV test company that the Lines FastTab on a Sales Order has an “Avalara Functions” dropdown arrow, where you can choose Tax Override or Entity Use Code.——————————

Jeff,
Another solution to consider when investigating is Vertex Inc.Ā
A solid solution that has many capabilities others don’t.Ā Along with a fixed pricing model – the smaller companies pay less for the services than larger companies as an example.Ā It’s budget friendly.
I’ve also finding to save a ton of money / headaches if you sell non-taxable products or have a lot of items on an invoice.Ā It’s simply one price and you don’t have to worry about what it will cost in those cases.
Here’s the contact I work with there:Ā ann.demilio@vertexinc.com

Nice Explain to Tax services, but Generally, Income tax in the UK is the tax where deductions are made at source, which means at the point where income is credited but not transferred to the concerned person and is thus, also known as tax deducted at source. Morning All,If one is looking for a Sales Tax solution, US or VAT, I would look at the three players in the NAV/BC space:
1. Wolters Kluwer (old CCH renamed)
2. Avalara
3. VertexEach have the functionality and I think it boils down to pricing, will they do the filings for you, international footprint (VAT) and how they work with Tax Exemption Certificate storage. The last is not critical. I have implemented the #1 and #2 over the last 12+ years.
Happy evaluation.
Thanks,
Steve??——————————

We’ve been using Avatax for years but just recently needed to implement a special use tax code.Ā We found Entity Use Tax code in Nav 17 on the Avatax Configuration page.Ā Ā You enter the customer, ship-to if applicable, and entity use code.Ā Seems to be working well.——————————
