Does anyone know how to determine where the bottleneck on an MR report is?Ā  I made some changes to a report and now it times out before finishing.

      Thanks, Tracy

      Hi Tracy,

Unfortunately there is no easy way to find out what changes caused the report to run slower. Ā  You will have to revert your report back to the original (hopefully you saved a copy of the row, column, or tree that you changed). Ā Step through each change one by one. Ā  Save the report and run it again until you find the change that is causing the problem.Ā

I know it’s painful but it’s pretty much the only way with any software program to troubleshoot what change caused this problem unless there is a debug mode and you’re a developer that knows how to read software code. (I don’t believe MR has a debug mode since it’s not an open source program).Ā

You can also also review the error logs in the configuration console. Ā What errors are you getting before during and after the timeout?Ā

What kind of changes are you making? Generally I find that if you change the report to show transaction and account detail it may slow it down tremendously because it has to get all the transactions so you can drill down, versus just the summary data.Ā

Adding a few more units to the tree can also bog it down. Ā Using a huge range rather than calling out the individual accounts on the rows can also be a problem.Ā

Let us us know what changes you’re making. Ā It might also be an issue with your data mart. You may want to have your It update MR to the latest version they fixed a lot of data mart errors in CU16.Ā

Lasty, worst case scenario there is a hack to edit the xml config on the server to increase the timeout so the report will run. Ā This is bad but if it’s a worst case scenario I can show you the edit to the file.

      Tracy,
I would recommend making a simple column layout (Just Description and YTD). Then use the current report with the new column.Ā  If it still times out, you can assume your issue is in the row layout. If it does not, it is likely in your column.Ā  Once you identify which has the issue, try adding a few rows or columns at a time to a new definition until you time out again.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
      -Tammy
