      We are running Dynamics AX 2012 R3 CU9 on a windows server 2012 R2 running SQL server 2012 SP1.

We plan to upgrade AX to CU13. and also upgrade SQL server .

what are the latest versions to upgrade to and what should be the plan and methodology. How to upgrade to Windows server 2016 and SQL server 2016 without any disruptions.
What should be first upgraded? SQL server or AX?

      Any help is highly appreciated.

The Windows and SQL upgrades are pretty straightforward.Ā  Make sure you are upgrading within the support matrix of AX.Ā  Search google for the latest version of the Dynamics AX Software requirements.Ā Ā  Downtime is managed using standard windows processes.

The CU13 upgrade is more involved.Ā Ā  Have you tested the update in a pre-production environment?Ā  How many overloaded AOT elements do you have?Ā Ā  There could be a large amount of merging involved.Ā  There is a CU13 installation guide which your partner has access to,Ā  and may be available on Customer Source.Ā Ā

Installing a CU is not a straightforward process,Ā  make sure you allocate enough time and resources to fully test the process in a pre-production environment being applying it your production environment.

What you upgrade to first depends on what version of SQL you want to go to.I am not sure at what point 2016 is supported with 2012. That being said the SQL upgrade is usually painless. There is a SQL upgrade advisor tool to run against your existing instance and it will point out any issues you might have with a deprecated feature or function maybe in SSIS or a stored proc or something. You can gfet that from the MS website.

Ax upgrade is a whole other thing. You need to plan and test that thoroughly

      Dear All,

      Thanks for the reply posted.
However my concern is the compatibility of each other Dynamics AX 2012 CU9 V/s SQL Server.

We are on CU9 at present on SQL server 2012 R2.

We wish to upgrade both – CU9 to CU13 and SQL server 2012 R2 to SQL server 2106.

Now if we first upgrade SQL server will AX cu9 be compatible to run under SQL server 2016?

OR if we upgrade CU 9 to CU13, will it work under SQL server 2012 R2?

The real question is what are the inter-compatibility which works in wither way.

Hi Bharat, we are on AX 2012 R3 CU8 and looking to go to AX 2012 CU13.Ā  After reviewing with our vendors and Microsoft we found going SQL 2014 SP1 was the recommendation.Ā  I think you will find it may vary a little but Microsoft recommend SQL 2014 SP1 for us.Ā  I might mention a couple of things.Ā  We found that one of our vendors who was looking to phase out there old product end of 2018 was not going to support CU13 which is added to our timeline for testing and implementing. Ā  Going from Cu9 to CU13 on the warehousing and inventory has some pretty significant logic changes in that things are broken into smaller processes and there was a lot of customizations overhead review for us. If your using that functionality you will want to add time for this. Ā  We are targeting June now.Ā  Good luck with your upgrade.

      HI Mark,

Thanks for sharing the information. It is very helpful.
My concern is that if we go ahead and upgrade SQL server to 2014 SVP1 or SP2, will it support to upgrade AX from CU9 to CU12 o2 CU13?
This we will need to ensure from Microsoft and our support partners.

      Hello Bharat,

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā “whetherĀ AX2012 R3 CU13 compatible with SQL 2016″ if this is what you are looking for, the answer is yes, It is compatibleĀ from and above versions of R3 CU11.

You can upgrade AX version first and then SQL.
