We are looking at Bar Coding and serial number tracking of our parts as they move through the plant. As a part arrives at a station, they operator will scan the bar code that has a serial number on it. We must like serial number be recorded and operator would have to put a location ID.Ā

Is anybody doing anything like this? Is there additional software needed to do bar coding scanning in NAV 2015? Is there any documentation in NAV 2015 on doing something like this.

I appreciate any information on this subject. Thanks in advanced.

We did something similar at an end-user I used to work for. Every part was serialized. Every station was considered a bin (we were using Warehouse Management). A bar code scanner is basically just a keyboard. It scans the code, interprets it as keystrokes and send it to the machine. We had a basic wedge scanner for these stations and taped barcodes on desks.

If I remember right we just did three scans on a custom form / page. Scan the serial (our serials were unique no matter the item). Scan the barcode on the desk (it was a bin). Scan a shortcut barcode that would post that as a movement journal in the warehouse. It would find where the item was in the system and if different move it to the new bin / station.

This was honestly 10 years ago, though, so there may be and probably is a better way to do it now.

      Good Morning Randy

If your company would like more information on Warehouse Management Systems for NAV, our company specializes in Microsoft Dynamics NAV and HighJump Warehouse Edge (formerly AccellosOne), along with the integration between NAV and WMS.Ā  HighJump Warehouse Edge has many advanced inventory management functionalities including bar coding and serial number tracking.Ā  There is a seamless integration between NAV and WMS to give much more robust inventory movement capabilities in the warehouse.Ā Ā

      Sincerely,

      Randy,

Are you looking to keep the Item in Inventory as it moves from station to station, essentially an inventory movement?Ā  Or are you looking to consume the part at specific stations, such as a consumption against a Production Order?

You can either use a USB style scanner to improve speed and accuracy of the data input, or you could use a more rugged handheld device so your people can be mobile.Ā  If you are using the USB style, making a page for capturing the inputs would probably be sufficient.Ā  If you are going to a handheld model, there are several available add-ons which make the connection and processing better.

I would reach out to your partner so they can tell you the options that will work best with your existing add-on products.

We are in the process of implementing barcode scanning to allow for bin transfer and posting production (NAV 2016).Ā  We worked with our partner and chose to use Insight Works for our scanning solution, which plugs into NAV.Ā  We are taking things one step at a time,Ā starting withĀ scanning at annual inventory two years ago, thenĀ onto receiving materials into the warehouse and posting purchase receipts;Ā this yearĀ we haveĀ begun cycle-counting our finished goods with the scanners. We are now in the process of activating bins with warehouse picks and ad hoc moves.Ā  So far, things are looking very good. We have our entire test database set-up and we plan to do a stress-test next Monday to see what, if any, error messages we come up with.Ā  We are testing our entire system from start to finish to ensure there are no issues.Ā  We deal with Lot #’sĀ and occasionally have products that are serialized as well,Ā so we have created aĀ product with both types of components in the BOM to see what happens.
