Do you work in K-12 Education and use Power BI as a data visualization tool? I am looking to connect with others using Power BI to displayĀ school and district data; we can share and learn good practices together.

I’m an analyst in a large urban school district who uses Power BI to create dashboards for different departments and purposes. I haven’t been using it very long, though, and I’m still transitioning between the way QlikView worked and the way Power BI does things.

I also work in an urban school district but probably smaller. 29k students. You’ll have to let me know how you structure and feed the data into PBI for disaggregations. If you’re like us, all data needs to be shared byĀ subgroups.

I work in a K-12 school district in Southern California and comparing notes would be very helpful. I am reasonably adept with spreadsheets and databases, however until about three months ago I had never even heard of PowerBI, so I am clearly a beginner with this tool. However, I am happy to share what I do know and look forward to exchange “how to” and really, any relevant ideas.

I am in the process of learning SQL but am pretty good with Access. So, I use Access to prep my data for PBI. We had a trial with Tableau last year which actually prepped me for PBI pretty well. What do you use for the database work before PBI? Speak simple – as I was a classroom teacher whom transitioned to data two years ago. Ha.

I’m a System Analyst in Oregon and am interested in hearing about how others are using PBI. I’m getting ready to begin a project to build a PBI dashboard over our LMS data. Love to hear what others are doing!

Hi Kate, I’m a co-founder at Edsby, we are a LMS / Analytics platform for K-12. We are just in the process of moving to PowerBI for our analytics engine, and we are also quite interested to see what folks are doing with PowerBI.

I wonder if it might be worth setting up a specific PowerBI User Group for K-12?

I’m in the K12 space with a private school. We use Power BI to analyze our data and tell stories for everything from grade analysis, absence alerts &Ā filtering, financial aid, and usage of our various Learning Management Systems (logins, total time, etc.).

Obviously, can’t share a lot of the underlying data, but here’s a screenshot of a summary view of student login information, where you can also click through down into the detail and see which students are using the LMS most/least and how it correlates to grade performance (e.g., is the new LMS working / improving outcomes / worth the expense):

I am so glad to see others working in education using Power BI! I sent in a proposal to begin a virtual group and it now looks like we’ll have enough interest to get one started. Stay tuned regarding the virtual group. As for my district, we have been using Power BI to display data varying from end-of-level tests, absenteeism, to our district’s pathway indicators… etc. So, most data sets feeding the Power BI displays are student-level. When I started using Power BI a year ago, I found the forums not as applicable to my tasks… I had to wade through a lot of information to get into what might be useful. It certainly does not need to be this laborious if we support each other. If an educator’s group had existed a year ago, I could have spent less time problem solving the platform and more time beefing up my data visualizations.Ā

I am on spring break this week but will be back in the office next week. I am looking forward to making connections with all of you and also getting a virtual group started.

      Take care, Kate

      Hi Kate,

We work with both K-12 data and higher education data.Ā  We pull together common public data sets into a single catalog and use Power BI to create what we call Interactives.Ā  We are a little lighter in K-12 but we leverage Common Core of Data as one of our data sets and also have selected state data.

My wife is a former school teacherĀ now working asĀ an Information Technology Coordinator (ITC) with the Arlington, VA school system. She and her colleagues are constantly struggling to put data together for their principals and other administrators. I am introducing her to Power BI so as to makeĀ her a rock star at her job,Ā and will put her in touch with you so that you guys can collaborate and grow your circle.

      Cheers!

This is a very interesting question.we used Power BI for creating 12 dashboards for one county admin for more than 100 principal for day today activities. Here is one of example with case study –Ā
