      Hi,

We currently have a very manual process to produce monthly financial statements. After the statements are generated by MR, we have to print them to PDF (individual as I can’t figure out how to print a group of reports to PDF at one time), then we have to restrict the PDF and then, finally, share the financials with the end user.

In an effort to make this process more efficient, we are considering using the Web Viewer for financial reports…..if we can keep some restrictions to it. Does anyone know if you can restrict printing or exporting to Excel from the Web Viewer? If not in the Web Viewer, can this restriction be possible in the Report Viewer?

Any other ideas on how to make this process more efficient, with some restrictions on the ability to export to Excel or print the reports?

      Thanks!

      Beth,

You might want to consider a more modern reporting tool which allows you to design in excel but deploy reports in a web-portal for self-service (with drill downs). You can even automate report distribution so that they run automatically and are sent to recipients in the format of your choosing (excel/pdf/etc.) and to the destination of your choosing (email list, share point, network directory. I’m sure many in GPUG are familiar with BI360 and can share their experiences. I hope this helps.

I disagree with you sal, yes solver is a superior tool to management reporter but not everyone wants to spend thousands of dollars on a reporting tool when they already have one for free.
      Management reporter has:
-a report scheduler where you can publish the reports to a network folder, to share point or to the report viewer application
-built in web server that allows you to share links or even publish a book (group) of reports to users
-security to control who can generate reports, who can export reports and who can edit and modify the reports.  You can even control exactly what data the user can see on the report at the tree level.
-ability to link excel workbooks to a report so the user can see comparative data such as guest counts from a hotel system compared against the expenses in GP (although I recommend importing that to GP as unit accounts typically)
It’s true that management reporter is missing a couple things, such as automatic emails, native excel for editing reports but the user interface of management reporter is very similar to excel and you can copy and paste excel data back and forth from MR to excel and vice versa.
Every tool has its pros and cons it just depends on how much money clients are willing to spend.  I always recommend people invest a small amount in training and have their VAR help them accomplish their goals with the tools they have first.  Then if it doesn’t work or meet their needs after some initial discovery then it’s time to move on to something bigger like jet reports, solver or adaptive planning (listed in order of how expensive they are and how feature rich) 🙂

      Hello,
It is possible to create restrictions in MR. If you were to create Reporting Trees to restrict access to one or more branches of the tree, then you could still publish the entire report but the user will have access only as per his/her security setups. Similarly security can be set up to give a user access to only certain reports within Report Viewer. Also this can be automated where you can schedule for these reports to be run on an automatic schedule as per your requirements. Most of the time I have clients that run them on a daily basis in the night so that the next morning, any user will get the most updated reports.

      Hope that helps.

Management Reporter Security: The Basics – Dynamics GP Insights
I have previously posted about the tendency to not think about security until the end of a project. This is just as true with Management Reporter as it is with Dynamics GP and SQL Reporting Services. However, as with anything…

Try this link, it may provide some insight into the restrictions available in MR

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know how to uncheck the following permissions for a Viewer role in Management Reporter? Export Reports and Print Reports

      HI Beth,

You can’t change the permission of any individual role in MR.  If you give someone a role in MR they have all the permission of that role.  IE. you can’t unselect any “permission”.   It is different than the way GP works in that you can modify and change the tasks in GP.  You can’t do that in MR.  However, like the user above mentioned, you can restrict what they can access in a report using tree security or permission in the Library.

For example, say you are running a report with a “Department” tree.  You can limit who can see each of the various department when they open the report.  NOTE:  if they have rights to the “department”  they would be able to export or print it.

      Hopefully that helps,

If you need more assistance let me know, I would be happy to help.

We use 2 types of security – folder security in the MR viewer and tree security for certain reports.   Users are assigned to the appropriate folder as set up in the viewer (Tools – Report library permissions).  A user can view any report that is saved to a folder assigned to them. The report’s reporting tree definition may also have security assigned to user/user group.    If the report has tree security, then the user can only view the units they have assigned.  The only downside I see to tree security is that it can be viewed from any folder, not just their viewer assigned folders, for their assigned units.

As far as preventing printing or excel download, I don’t know if there is a way to prevent.

      I hope this is helpful.
