We’re new to GP (pre go-live) and have a few questions re: assigning eligibility rules to benefits.  For example, I have a benefit in which only the employees of a particular dept. are eligible for; can I create a rule to restrict enrollment to others outside of that dept.?  From what I’m reading about eligibility rules, benefit attributes, plan options, and benefit packages, these are all applicable to Employee Self-Service.  Will creating an eligibility rule for this prevent HR from enrolling an ineligible employee in that benefit?  Or, is there another way to accomplish this?  We have different benefit plans/options for classes as well, so I’d like to create eligibility rules or benefit packages for this.  I’m wondering if these features truly only apply to Self-Service functionality, and if someone could point me to an updated resource document to set this up.

We’ll likely be using a third party software for Employee Self-Service due to accessibility/security (we want employees to have access from home, not just internally).  In that case, do I have to set my benefits up with the Self-Service features/structure as noted above in order for it to display correctly in the third party software?  Right now our benefits are set up in “Benefits & Deductions/Health Insurance, Life Insurance, etc.  I’m starting to wonder if this is incorrect, given our intention to use Self-Service, even though it will be through third party software.

      Thanks, Tina – MPW

      Hi Tina,
I’ll leave the answer to the first part of the question to the HR specialist around here :-).

For the second part, the anser is : it depends on the 3rd party software you’re gong to select & use to replace the ESS feature in GP.
Some may work directly with the Employee data in GP and create their own tables for the benefits and everything else usually to be found in such application, some may have to rely on GP’s ESS data.. You really need to work this out with your partner and/or a seasonned HR consultant.
The important thing before you buy any 3rd-party product is to make sure it will work with your data and fullfil your expectations. Ask for a trial of the product whenever possible on your own data set.

Hi Tina, the Eligibility Rules are specific to Benefit Self Service to help you assign benefits to employees.
I do not think you would set this information up unless you are going to deploy benefit self service.
Here is my video and doc on BSS which you have probably have reviewed too.
